CNC geometry measurement is an assessment of the geometric errors of a CNC machine tool — that is, whether the axes move in straight lines, whether they are perpendicular to each other, whether the table is levelled and the movements are parallel. Geometry errors do not result from the program or tool, so they cannot be “eliminated with an offset” — they must first be measured. The commission ends with a technical report containing results and interpretation. We qualify the measurement scope individually: it depends on the machine, purpose, on-site conditions and available equipment.

When it is worth ordering

The most common signals: parts come out tapered despite a correct program, surfaces milled from two sides are not parallel, holes drilled over a large spacing do not maintain squareness, and the error depends on the part position on the table. What the scope covers

  • assessment of machine levelling and mounting condition,
  • measurement of straightness of movement of selected axes,
  • assessment of axis squareness (e.g. X–Y, Z to table plane),
  • assessment of parallelism of working elements (e.g. table–guideways, spindle–axis),
  • within the agreed scope — measurement of selected geometric errors of rotary axes.

The measurement scope qualification determines which of these elements make sense for the particular machine and purpose — not every geometry can be reasonably measured without station preparation.

What the scope does not cover

  • we do not perform re-levelling or geometry adjustment — these are service tasks,
  • we do not issue calibration certificates; the measurement is not a formal ISO calibration,
  • we do not assess geometry requiring removal of covers or assemblies,
  • we do not guarantee that the indicated errors are the only causes of process problems — the report describes the measured condition.

What the client receives — technical report

The report contains: machine and measurement condition description, list of measured geometric quantities with results and units, interpretation (how the measured errors translate into part shape) and recommendations — e.g. need for levelling, further guideway diagnostics or process limitations until repair.

We most often measure geometry on CNC machining centers and gantry centres, where large work areas magnify angular errors. Geometry measurement is worth combining with CNC axis accuracy measurement — together they give a fuller picture of the machine condition summarised by CNC machine accuracy assessment. Frequently asked questions

Can geometry errors be corrected programmatically?

Partially — some CNC controls allow selected components to be compensated, but compensation does not replace correct mechanics. Before compensating anything, the errors must be measured.

Does the machine have to be taken out of production?

Yes, for the duration of measurements we need full access to the machine. The time depends on the qualified scope.
