Accuracy measurement is not an end in itself — it is a decision-making tool. It is worth doing when the stakes are high (purchase, contract, complaint), when something has changed (relocation, repair, collision), or when “something is wrong” but no one can say what. Below are eight situations in which measurement pays off fastest.

1. Purchase of a used machine

2. Relocation or repositioning in the hall

3. Acceptance after repair or rebuild

4. After a collision

5. Dimensional problems that cannot be explained

When the CNC does not hold dimension and the operator, programmer, and technologist have three different theories — measurement resolves whether the problem lies in the machine, and if so, where.

6. Start of a new contract or part with tight tolerances

Before accepting an order whose tolerances are at the edge of the machine’s capability, check where that edge really is. Measurement before quoting is cheaper than a complaint after delivery.

7. Complaint, dispute, insurance

When the customer claims defective parts and you suspect the machine (or vice versa), a technical report from an independent inspection is a neutral document describing the actual condition.

8. Periodic verification of the machine fleet condition

Machines wear predictably — but only measurement shows the rate. Cyclic assessment (e.g. once a year on key machines) lets you plan repairs instead of reacting to breakdowns.

What if the measurement reveals a problem?

That is good news — a known problem with numbers is cheaper than a guessed one. The report indicates which axis or parameter deviates from reference, allowing the service department to quote a specific repair instead of a “blind inspection”. Many faults can be temporarily worked around organisationally (moving tight tolerances to a healthy machine, limiting axis travel range), so knowledge of the condition feeds into decisions immediately, not only after repair.
