CNC Machine Tool After Relocation — Why Verify Accuracy
Moving a CNC machine tool to a new hall or location: what can change during repositioning, how to prepare acceptance after relocation, and what is worth measuring.

Short answer
A machine tool’s accuracy does not “travel” with it. Disassembly, transport, new foundation, and re-levelling change the machine geometry — sometimes by values relevant to part tolerances. That is why after relocation it is worth verifying the machine condition before starting production: ideally against a measurement taken while the machine was still in the old location.
What can change during relocation
- Levelling and body distortion — a machine set on a new floor works under different stress; this changes axis straightness and table flatness.
- Axis geometry — squareness and parallelism of axes after re-assembly of components (heads, gantries, tables) rarely reproduce “by itself”.
- Foundation and vibration damping — a different floor, pads, and anchors affect vibrations and dimensional stability.
- CNC control parameters and compensations — after repositioning these are sometimes “corrected” by eye, without measurement.
- Peripheral systems — tool magazine, pallet changer, feeders: grip positions after reinstallation of equipment are often shifted.
How to prepare relocation so acceptance is not guesswork
- Before disassembly: take a reference measurement of key parameters (axis positioning, geometry, backlash) — it will be the reference point.
- During transport: secure axes according to the manufacturer’s procedure (locks, transport positions), document disassembly.
- At the new location: check foundation requirements (floor load capacity, level, anchors) before the machine is moved into place.
- After installation: verify levelling, geometry, and positioning, and compare with the reference measurement.
What an inspection after relocation can assess
As part of an independent inspection and accuracy assessment of a CNC machine tool after repositioning, we can:
- verify levelling and its effect on axis geometry,
- measure positioning and repeatability of selected axes in the new location,
- assess axis squareness and parallelism within the scope that can be agreed,
- compare results with the pre-relocation measurement and indicate significant differences,
- describe the condition in a technical report — also as part of acceptance of the relocation contractor’s work.
The scope depends on the machine, purpose, on-site conditions, and available equipment. Laser positioning measurement is carried out after agreeing the scope and availability.
Floor — the underestimated element of relocation
A new hall often has a different slab: thickness, reinforcement, subsoil condition, dilatation position. A machine set on a floor with insufficient load capacity or near a dilatation works under changing stress — geometry “floats” as the floor settles and with temperature. Before the machine is moved in, it is worth checking the manufacturer’s foundation requirements, and after installation give the machine time to stabilise and repeat levelling control. These are cheap steps compared with a batch of defective parts.
What the result does not determine
A post-relocation measurement describes the machine condition in the new location — it does not guarantee that the machine will achieve catalogue parameters, and does not release the relocation contractor from liability. We do not perform formal ISO calibration or issue calibration certificates.
When service is needed immediately
- the machine was transported without transport locks or had incidents during loading,
- after start-up in the new location vibrations, noise, or drive errors appeared,
- the first parts after relocation are out of tolerance — the machine does not hold dimension,
- mechanical damage from repositioning is visible.
FAQ
Is it enough if the moving company levels the machine? Levelling is necessary but not sufficient. Not all levelling is equal — what matters is how geometry and axis positioning look after installation. That is checked by measurement, not by a spirit level.
When is the best time to commission verification — before or after production start? Safest before serial production: a detected deviation at this stage is a correction cost, not the cost of a batch of defective parts.
