The used machine tool market runs on trust and declarations — and the buyer carries the risk. A demo under power reveals little: an axis will traverse smoothly even with significant wear. Acceptance of a used CNC machine tool before purchase should combine mechanical visual inspection with measurement of key parameters. This is the only way to make the price reflect the actual condition, not the appearance of the covers.
What to check during visual inspection
- Documentation and history — machine log, service records, spindle and axis running hours, not just “year of manufacture”.
- Condition of guideways and ball screws — signs of wear, corrosion, repairs; condition of covers and suction units.
- Spindle — taper runout, signs of collisions, noise at start-up and at high speed, collision history.
- Mechanical backlash — manual check of clearance in axes and table; more on backlash.
- CNC control and parameters — version, options, hours on counters, stored alarms, compensation tables.
- Peripherals — tool magazine, pallet changer, coolant, hydraulics, chip conveyor.
Questions worth asking the seller
- Why is the machine being sold and what did it machine in recent years?
- Were there any collisions, spindle repairs, ball screw or guideway replacements?
- Are there any measurement reports or acceptance protocols?
- Is the machine still in production, or has it been disconnected (and since when)?
- What is included in the sale: accessories, documentation, programs, standards?

Inspection under power or on a disconnected machine?
A running, warmed-up machine shows the most: axis traverses, spindle test at various speeds, tool change, positioning measurement. A disconnected or cold machine limits the scope to mechanical inspection and documentation — the report then reliably describes what was assessed and what remained unverified. When buying from a dealer, it is worth agreeing inspection conditions in advance: access to the control, ability to run a test program, permission to take measurements.
What the result does not determine
A pre-purchase inspection describes the condition on the day of the survey — it does not guarantee trouble-free operation after purchase and does not replace trial machining of your part. We do not issue calibration certificates or perform formal ISO calibration. The report limits the decision risk, but the decision (and its consequences) remains yours.
When inspection is especially recommended
- the machine costs enough that a misjudgement will be expensive,
- the seller does not allow measurements or restricts access — that is information in itself,
- the machine is to be the foundation of a new process or contract,
- you are buying remotely, from a dealer, or from abroad.

The seller does not agree to a laser axis measurement. What then? The scope can be limited to visual inspection and simple mechanical measurements — the report will then describe exactly what could be assessed and what could not. Lack of permission for measurement is worth including in the risk valuation.
